Use Case 4: Male Gender Roles – Hunting, Animal Handling, and Exposure Risks
Scenario:
In certain rural and peri-urban areas, men are more likely to engage in hunting, butchering, and handling raw meat or animals. This increases exposure to zoonotic diseases (e.g., Ebola, avian influenza, anthrax).
Gender Considerations:
- Within SORMAS, you can enter data regarding occupational exposure risks adequately.
- Men may under-report symptoms due to social norms around masculinity and health-seeking behavior.
- Higher risk of becoming index cases in zoonotic outbreaks.
Recommended Strategy:
- Include information regarding occupation and exposure indicators in SORMAS.
- Use community-based reporting networks to track zoonotic risks.
