Use Case 3: Women as Caregivers and Household Responsibilities
Scenario:
Women often act as the primary caregivers for children and elderly family members. In many contexts, they are responsible for recognizing symptoms, seeking care, and reporting illnesses. However, due to childcare and household duties, many women delay or skip doctor visits for themselves.
On the other hand, because they may recieve care at home, men often postpone seeking medical attention, turning to professional care when their condition becomes too severe. This may result in wider disease transmission and poorer treatment outcomes.
Gender Considerations:
- Increased exposure to infections through close contact with sick family members.
- Underrepresentation of women’s own health data in surveillance systems because they may prioritize care for others.
- Risk of delayed treatment and under-diagnosis.
Recommended Strategy:
- Use SORMAS as a digital surveillance system to include household-level reporting.
- Provide telemedicine and mobile consultation options for women with time constraints.
- Develop awareness campaigns that encourage women to seek care for themselves.
