Use Case 4: Male Gender Roles – Hunting, Animal Handling, and Exposure Risks

Scenario:
In certain rural and peri-urban areas, men are more likely to engage in hunting, butchering, and handling raw meat or animals. This increases exposure to zoonotic diseases (e.g., Ebola, avian influenza, anthrax).

Gender Considerations:

  • Within SORMAS, you can enter data regarding occupational exposure risks adequately.
  • Men may under-report symptoms due to social norms around masculinity and health-seeking behavior.
  • Higher risk of becoming index cases in zoonotic outbreaks.

Recommended Strategy:

  • Include information regarding occupation and exposure indicators in SORMAS.
  • Use community-based reporting networks to track zoonotic risks.
