Now that you know what user rights are and what they are used for… What are user roles?

The answer is actually very simple. A user role is a predefined set of user rights that can be created and edited by system administrators. Their purpose is to have a reusable set of rights you can easily attach to a user when creating user accounts. It also has the added benefit of not having to potentially adjust dozens of users if you want to change a single right. Instead, you just edit the user role that is attached to the users once and it will immediately affect all users at the same time.

While you can assign both individual rights as well as user roles to one user account. We recommend never assigning individual rights and always setting the rights as part of a specific role and then assigning the role to the user instead. If you assign individual rights, the required effort to maintain correct assignment in case of changes is exponentially higher the more user accounts you have, which is not the case when utilizing user roles.
